The build is simple. The wood is the whole project — and buying it is where people go wrong.
Buy a kiln-dried slab. Air-dried is not the same thing, and a slab that isn't down to 6–8% moisture content will move, cup, and crack in your living room over the next two years. Ask the seller for the moisture reading. If they can't give you one, walk.
Everything else is flattening, filling the voids, and bolting legs on. Steel legs, because a slab this good doesn't need a wooden base competing with it.

A board foot is a volume, not a length: 144 cubic inches, or a piece 1″ thick by 12″ wide by 12″ long. The “≈” note beside each row shows roughly how much 3/4″ × 6″ board that works out to.
Overall cost: $$$$. Lumber prices vary by region, species, and season, so we give a band rather than a figure we would only be pretending to know.

Kiln-dried. 6–8% moisture. Ask, and don't accept 'it's been drying in the barn for years' — air-dried plateaus around 12–15% and will keep moving indoors.
Sight down it for twist. Some cup is fixable by flattening; a badly twisted slab means you'll lose most of your thickness getting it flat.
Two rails, a bridge that carries the router, a big flat bit. Screw the slab down to a torsion box or shim it so it can't rock.
Take light passes, working across the slab in overlapping rows. Flip and repeat for the second face.
It's slow, dusty, and loud. It's also the only reliable way to flatten a slab without a $40,000 machine.
Tape the underside of every void and check with tuck tape (epoxy won't stick to it). Mix and pour.
For voids deeper than about 1/2", use a deep-pour formula and pour in layers — standard epoxy generates its own heat as it cures, and a thick pour will get hot enough to crack or yellow.
Cure fully — check the manufacturer's time and then add a day.
Any check that runs toward an edge will keep running. A butterfly key mechanically stitches it shut.
Cut the keys, lay them across the crack, trace with a knife, and rout/chisel a mortise to depth. Glue them in proud, then plane or sand flush.
They're structural, and they happen to be the detail everyone will comment on.
Square both ends with a circular saw against a clamped straight-edge.
Strip the bark off the live edges — all of it. Bark that's left on will fall off in a year and take finish with it. A wire brush, a scraper, and patience.
Then sand the live edge smooth. Keep its natural undulation; just make it pleasant to touch.
80 → 120 → 150 → 180 → 220. The epoxy sands at a different rate than the walnut, so check with raking light for high spots. A card scraper levels cured epoxy without gumming up.
Hardwax oil, 3 coats, both faces. Finishing the underside is not optional on a slab — an unsealed bottom face absorbs moisture at a different rate than the sealed top and cups the whole table.
Position the legs inset ~4" from each end. Mark, drill pilot holes, lag them on with washers.
Do not drill through. Measure your slab thickness, measure your lag length, and leave at least 1/2" of meat. A lag point coming through the top of a $400 slab is a bad afternoon.
Set it in the living room and accept the compliments.
