Lack-Inspired Bookcase

Inspired by the ubiquitous flat-pack shelf, this is about as simple as a bookcase gets: two 2x12 sides and five 2x12 shelves screwed into a ladder. The 2x12 stock gives it a chunky, solid look that reads more expensive than the parts cost, and there's nothing to it but square cuts and screws.

Build the outer box first — top and bottom shelves sandwiched between the two sides with 2-1/2" screws — and check it for square before adding the middle shelves. The plan notes you're better off NOT using a pocket-hole jig here unless you have a good reason, since face-screwing through the sides into the shelf ends is simpler and plenty strong for a shelf this heavy. Lay out the three middle shelves by their centers (18", 36", 54" up) and predrill so the thick stock doesn't split.

The one thing this design can't do on its own is stay upright reliably — a tall, narrow case is a tip hazard, especially loaded high. The plan calls for two L-brackets on the bottom wall-side of the shelves to anchor it, and that's not optional if it'll be anywhere near kids. Screw it to a stud. Finish is up to you; the chunky edges take paint or a natural finish equally well.
