Glue and brad the bottom piece to the base of the 36" back board, square to it. Sand all the pieces first — this hangs at eye level by your front door, the one place rough-sawn reads as unfinished rather than rustic.

Nail the two side pieces to both the bottom and the back board. The box takes shape — three sides and the tall back.

Measure the actual opening, cut the front piece to fit, and nail it to the sides and bottom. Cut-to-fit beats the list here because picket thickness wanders — yours is the only measurement that counts.

Mount the house numbers on the back board per their packaging — centered, evenly spaced, level with each other; measure, don't eyeball.

Drill several drainage holes through the box bottom. Then hang it: fasteners through the back board into whatever your wall is actually made of — siding wants deck screws into wood, masonry wants anchors. Plant something that trails, and check the numbers are readable from the street, which was the whole assignment.
