Hockey gear comes off the ice soaked, and if it goes straight into a bag it grows an unforgettable smell. This is a freestanding rack that solves it: a central 2x4 post on a wide, stable base, with 1x3 arms (or old hockey sticks) and hooks to hang every piece out to dry.
The whole build is 2x4s and construction screws — no joinery, no finish required, because it lives in a garage or mudroom. The one decision that matters is the post height, and it's driven by the player. The plan calls out real numbers: about 56" for a youth size (with room to grow into), 60" for a bit more hanging room, up to 66" for a taller adult with full-size gear. Cut it to the person who'll use it.
Stability is everything on a top-heavy rack loaded with wet equipment, so the base is built up from four 24" 2x4s and two short spacers into a wide cross that won't tip when a chest protector hangs off one side. Build it flat, check it doesn't rock before you load it, and shim the base if your floor is uneven. Hooks on the front and back double the capacity — jerseys on the back, hard gear on the arms.

Cut the main post to the height of the person who'll use it — about 56" for a youth size with room to grow, 60" for more hanging room, up to 66" for a taller adult with full gear.
Attach the post to one 24" base foot with two 3" screws. Make sure the post is square to the base (90°) and flush at the bottom, or the whole rack will lean.
Attach a second 24" foot to the other face of the post, lined up with the first so the two feet are parallel. Two screws again. This sandwiches the post between two feet for a strong base connection.
Add the base spacers and the remaining two 24" feet to spread the base into a wide, stable cross — position them with about 3" of overhang on each side as shown, two screws per joint. Set it on the floor and confirm it sits flat and doesn't rock before you go further. A rack that wobbles empty will tip when it's loaded with wet gear.
Attach the 1x3 arms (or hockey sticks) near the top of the post with the 2" screws, then add cup hooks or clips. Put hooks on both the front and back — hang jerseys off the back and hard gear on the arms to dry everything at once. Knock down any sharp edges and it's ready to load.
