The notches that hold each shelf tier are cut directly into the two solid 1x6 sides — trace the shelf board's actual width onto the side piece first, rather than working from a fixed measurement, so the notch matches your real stock instead of a nominal size that may not match what you bought. Sand the cut edges of every notch smooth before assembly; a rough jigsaw edge is hard to reach once the shelf is glued into place.
All five of the plywood front pieces and the back panel come off a single 24" x 48" sheet if you lay out the cuts as shown — a genuinely efficient use of material for a shelf this size, with almost nothing left over.

Assumes 8 ft stock, a 1/8" saw kerf, and buying each part at its own width. Change the board size or kerf on the full board plan →
Lay out and cut the back panel and the five front pieces from a single 24" x 48" sheet of 1/4" plywood, as shown in your reference layout. The back comes out slightly smaller than the full opening, but since the 1x2 hanging cleat covers that area, it won't matter. Use a circular saw or table saw for these cuts.
Place a shelf-bottom board on top of a side board with one edge flush, and trace a line down the side board to mark the notch width. Mark the notch depth, then carefully cut the notches out with a jigsaw. Sand the cut edges smooth.
Attach the two sides together with the shelf-bottom boards, seated in the notches. Use either 3/4" pocket holes with 1-1/4" pocket-hole screws, or 2" construction screws.
Attach the 1x2 cleat to the top the same way you attached the shelves. You'll use this cleat to hang the finished unit on the wall.
Attach the back panel to the assembled unit with glue and finish nails.
Glue and nail the front pieces on, using 3/4" brad nails.
