This box is sized to be built entirely from scrap — a 22" length of 1x4 and a 17" length of 1x6 cover the whole thing, so it's a good project for using up the odd pieces left over from a bigger build rather than buying new material. The lid and bottom are cut to the same size and get the same even overhang all the way around, which is what gives the finished box its clean, deliberate line rather than looking like a plain glued-up cube.
Pre-drilling starter holes for the hinge screws makes a real difference on a box this small — there's very little material to work with, and a starter hole is what keeps a screw from wandering off center and splitting the thin stock.

Assumes 8 ft stock, a 1/8" saw kerf, and buying each part at its own width. Change the board size or kerf on the full board plan →
Attach the front and back to the sides, keeping the top, bottom, and outside edges flush. Use glue and 1-1/4" finish nails.
Attach the bottom to the box, keeping the back edges flush and leaving an even overhang on the sides (about 1/2"). The front will also have a 1/2" overhang. Use glue and 1-1/4" finish nails. The top is cut to the same size as the bottom and gets the same overhang.
Finish the box and top before attaching the hinges. Fill the nail holes with matching or stainable wood filler. Once the filler dries, sand until smooth, remove all sanding dust, and apply your chosen finish.
Attach the flat hinges to the back of the box and the lid, as shown in your reference. Mark where the holes should go and pre-drill starter holes to make driving the screws easier. Attach the top screws first, then align the hinge on the box and attach the bottom screws.
