The picture ledge is the highest ratio of wall transformation to effort in woodworking: an L of two 1x3s with a 1x2 lip along the front, hung level on the studs, and suddenly frames lean and layer and swap around like a gallery instead of hanging in fixed holes. An 8-foot ledge requires NO cuts — three full-length boards and screws. Shorter runs are one cut per board.
The wood menu from the source is worth passing along whole: pine furring strips are the budget pick and take paint or rustic stain happily; select pine or hardwood matches nicer trim; and MDF is specifically vetoed — it sags under its own span and lets go of screws, which is a poor résumé for a shelf.
Assembly is screws about every 12" (or brads and glue, which finish cleaner). The finishing tip in the source is the kind of small intelligence this collection loves: for painted ledges, fill fastener holes ONLY on the front 1x2 — the top and back are invisible in use, so filling them is labor donated to nobody.
Hanging is the only structural moment: through the back 1x3 into STUDS, minimum two screws, one per stud crossed — and if the ledge only crosses one stud, both screws go into that stud. Books and framed art are heavier than they look; drywall anchors are not invited to this one either.

Screw one 1x3 to the edge of the other in an L, a 2" trim screw about every 12". Then attach the 1x2 lip to the front — screws, or brads and glue if you have the nailer (fewer holes to fill).
Finishing shortcut worth adopting: filling holes only matters on the front lip; the shelf top hides under frames and the back hides against the wall. Fill the lip, sand, paint or stain, done.
Mark the studs, hold the ledge at height, level it, and screw through the back 1x3 into every stud it crosses — two screws minimum, and if only one stud is available, both screws go into it.
Lean the frames, layer the little ones in front of the big ones, and rearrange them monthly forever, which is the entire reason ledges beat nails.
