Measure the distance between the inside edges of your tub's rails where the tray will rest. That number is your finished tray length — cut both 1x6 boards and the 1x2 lip to match it, not to the 36" example in the cut list.
Nail and glue the 1x2 lip along one long edge of one of the 1x6 boards. This becomes the tray's front edge, keeping items from sliding off.
Place the second 1x6 board next to the first and attach them with the hinge along the facing edges, so the two boards fold together like a book. Check that it folds flat and opens back out to span your tub cleanly before finishing.
Sand everything smooth, then stain and seal with a water-resistant poly or clear coat — this piece lives in a wet environment, so don't skip the finish.
