A dining table is the piece your family will actually live on, and the one most likely to be ruined by a single mistake: fastening a solid top rigidly to its base. A 36"-wide oak top moves close to 1/4" across the seasons. Screw it down flat and it will split — not maybe, will.
This build uses figure-8 fasteners so the top floats. Everything else is straightforward: a trestle base, a panel glue-up, and a durable finish.
White oak for the top (hard, water-resistant, gorgeous), and you can use the same for the base or save money with ash.

A board foot is a volume, not a length: 144 cubic inches, or a piece 1″ thick by 12″ wide by 12″ long. The “≈” note beside each row shows roughly how much 3/4″ × 6″ board that works out to.
Overall cost: $$$$. Lumber prices vary by region, species, and season, so we give a band rather than a figure we would only be pretending to know.

Bring the oak into your shop and sticker it for at least a week. Lumberyard moisture content is not your house's moisture content, and a top glued up from wood that hasn't settled will cup after you deliver it.
This is the least glamorous step and the one that most often decides whether the table survives.
Joint one edge and one face of each top board, plane to a consistent 1-3/4".
Lay the six boards out and shuffle for grain. Alternate the end-grain arcs so any cupping cancels rather than compounds. Mark a V across them.
Do it in two halves of three boards rather than all six at once. Six joints closing at the same time with glue setting is more than two hands can manage well.
Use cauls across the top and bottom to keep the panel flat. Glue the two halves together the next day. Overnight cure each time.
A 36" x 72" slab won't fit any planer you own. Options: a router sled, a belt sander and a long straight-edge, hand planes, or pay a shop with a wide sander.
Trim the ends square with a track saw or a circular saw against a clamped straight-edge. Final: 36" x 72".
Each trestle: a foot, a post, and a top cleat. Mortise-and-tenon the post into both.
Shape the feet — a curve or a chamfered taper — so the table doesn't look like it's standing on bricks. This is where the design lives.
The stretcher passes through a through-mortise in each post and is locked with a tapered wedge.
It's the classic trestle joint and it's not just decorative — the stretcher is what stops the table from racking when someone leans on the end. Cut it snug and wedge it tight.
Read this twice. Rout shallow recesses in the top cleats for figure-8 fasteners. Screw one side into the cleat, the other into the underside of the top.
The fasteners pivot, which lets the top expand and contract across its width — up to 1/4" seasonally on a 36" oak top.
Do not screw the top down through the cleats. It will look fine for six months and then split, and there is no fixing it. This step is why the table lasts.
Sand the top to 180 (with hardwax oil) or 220 (with film finish). Don't go finer for oil — it burnishes the surface closed and the finish won't penetrate.
Finish the top *and the underside*. An unfinished underside absorbs and releases moisture at a different rate than the top, and that imbalance cups the slab. Both faces, same coats.
Set the base where it belongs, drop the top on, drive the figure-8 screws.
The first scratch will hurt. The hundredth won't. That's what the table is for.
