Not every bed wants a statement headboard — sometimes the wall does that job, or the room does. This frame is the essentials only: four short 4x4 legs, a 2x6 box, a slat system, and one deliberate detail that elevates it past 'platform in the corner': the 2x6 rails sit INSET 3/4" on the legs, and a 1x2 trim rail caps the top edge flush with the mattress side, so the frame reads as a paneled base with a shadow line rather than four boards on posts.
The inset trick is executed with scrap: block the 2x6 up on 1x scrap while pocket-screwing it to the legs, and the 3/4" reveal happens automatically. Two 1-1/2" pocket holes and 2-1/2" screws per end joint, three per side rail — this is a fifteen-joint build.
The 45°-beveled corner supports do double duty, bracing each corner AND giving the frame lift points that don't stress the rail joints when the bed gets dragged for cleaning. Full size and up adds a center 2x4 rail with its own leg — skip it and the slats will remind you nightly what it was for.
Cut list is QUEEN; all five sizes publish (twin through California king — even an extra-long twin variant), with the deltas carried in the notes. The 1x2 top trim is measure-and-cut-to-fit by design, since the reveal must wrap YOUR assembled box. Works under any mattress with no box spring — that's the 'essential' promise.

Assumes 8 ft stock, a 1/8" saw kerf, and buying each part at its own width. Change the board size or kerf on the full board plan →
Join each short 2x6 frame board between a pair of 4x4 legs — two 1-1/2" pocket holes and 2-1/2" screws per joint — with the 2x6 blocked up on 1x SCRAP so it sits inset 3/4" from the legs' faces. The scrap is the jig; the inset is the design.
Connect the two leg sections with the long frame boards — three pocket holes per end this time, same inset via the same scrap blocks. Then square the frame by matching diagonals; the trim and slats both assume a rectangle.
Screw the four beveled corner supports across the inside corners — brace and lift-point in one part. Add the center 2x4 rail end-to-end down the middle (pocket holes), with the center leg under its midpoint.
Twin skips the center rail; everything bigger that skips it regrets it by the first mattress flip.
Measure your assembled box and cut the 1x2 top trim to fit, brad-nailed flush with the frame's inside edge — the 3/4" reveal below it is the whole aesthetic, so keep the reveal even as you go.
Lay and screw the slats per your mattress's spacing spec, sand, finish, and push it against whichever wall is playing headboard this year.
