Step-by-step build — 6 steps. Also available as a print sheet.
Check that the two 72" top boards are exactly the same length with the bevels matching — stack them and feel for any offset. Drill 3/4" pocket holes along one edge of one board and join the pair into a 14-1/2"-wide top with 1-1/4" pocket screws and glue.
Clamp the seam flat while you drive the screws (a straight scrap clamped across each end works if you don't own cauls) — pocket screws alone will let the seam step, and a stepped seam in a tabletop is forever.
Edge-join the beveled leg boards into two panels the same way. Then stand them against the top's beveled ends and glue and brad-nail the waterfall miters together.
Add blocking behind each joint — 1x8 scraps glued and screwed into the inside corner. The source build added this after the fact for good reason: a brad-nailed miter is an alignment aid, not a structure. The blocking is the structure.
Attach the square-ended leg boards to the top and outer legs with glue and brads, all outside edges perfectly flush. Each leg is now reading as a solid 8"-ish beam — the hollow inside is your secret.
Measure between the legs on your actual table — not the cut list — and cut the two stretcher boards to fit. Drill 3/4" pocket holes on the ends, tack the assembly in place at the top with brads and glue, then drive the pocket screws from the inside where they'll never be seen.
'Measure and cut to fit' is the honest instruction here: by this point your table is its own reference, and 1/16" of accumulated variance is normal.
Join the inner leg panels, drilling two 3/4" pocket holes at the TOP of each panel's finished side. Set each panel in place, brad-nail it to the legs, then reach inside and screw the pocket holes up into the underside of the top.
Putting those pocket holes at the top, on the finished side, is deliberate — they end up hidden under the top where no one can ever see them, and they tie the whole leg box to the tabletop.
Draw the dovetail pin outlines across the waterfall corners — where through-dovetails would show if these beams were solid. Score the layout lines firmly with a flat-head screwdriver, then rough up the wood INSIDE each pin shape to crush the fibers.
Sand everything else smooth, then stain. The crushed areas absorb more stain and darken exactly the way end grain does — which is the entire illusion. Wipe, topcoat, and let people knock on the 'beams' to check if they're solid. They will.
