This is a good first build for someone learning hand tools — five flat pieces, straight cuts, and a handle, with nothing that requires a jig or a power router. The whole box comes from a single plywood half-sheet, which keeps material cost and waste both low.
The dowel-rod handle is nailed through both end pieces with two nails per side, not one. A single nail lets the handle rotate under load — exactly the failure mode you'd expect from something meant to be picked up and carried repeatedly.
Size the five pieces to fit your own half-sheet with a little room for saw kerf; there's no need to match another builder's panel layout exactly as long as the bottom, two sides, and two ends all fit together square.

Lay out a bottom, two side panels, and two end panels on your plywood half-sheet, sized to fit together with a little room for the saw kerf. Cut all five pieces.
Nail one side panel to the bottom panel, then nail the second side panel to the other edge of the bottom.
Nail both end panels between the two side panels to close up the box.
Cut the dowel rod to fit between the two end pieces above the box, then nail it in place through each end with two nails per side so it can't rotate under load.
Sand all edges and surfaces smooth, then paint or finish as desired.
