The A-frame picnic table is a genuinely great piece of engineering that nobody thinks about. The angled legs and the seat supports form triangles, and triangles don't rack — which is why these tables survive decades of being climbed on, sat on, and left in the rain.
Build it from construction lumber. It's not fine furniture and pretending otherwise wastes money.
Use bolts, not screws, at the leg joints. Screws in a joint that flexes will work loose and shear. Carriage bolts will still be tight in fifteen years.

Assumes 8 ft stock, a 1/8" saw kerf, and buying each part at its own width. Change the board size or kerf on the full board plan →
Cut all four legs 36" long, with both ends at 30°, and the two angles parallel to each other (not mirrored). The leg is a parallelogram, not a trapezoid.
Cut one, check it sits flat against a square corner, then use it as a template for the other three. All four must be identical or the table rocks.
Lay two legs in an X (well — an A), with a top cross brace at the top and the seat cross brace crossing them lower down.
Bolt every intersection with carriage bolts, washers, nuts. Two bolts per joint so nothing can pivot.
Make the second assembly identical. Compare them side by side before moving on.
Lay the five top boards face-down on a flat surface, spaced 1/4" apart (a couple of framing nails make good spacers).
Set the two leg assemblies on top, ~12" in from each end, and screw down through the boards into the top cross braces.
The overhang at each end is what lets people sit at the ends of the table.
Flip the table upright. Screw two seat boards to each side onto the protruding seat cross braces, leaving a 1/4" gap between them.
Check the seats are level and at equal heights. Sit on both sides.
Run the center brace diagonally from the underside of the tabletop's center down to the middle of the seat cross brace. Bolt or screw both ends.
Without this piece, the whole table can rack side to side — it slowly parallelograms itself over years of people sitting down hard. With it, the structure is triangulated and rigid.
It's the least visible part of the table and the reason the ones in parks are still standing.
Round over every edge and corner people will touch — the seat fronts especially. Sand the tabletop smooth.
Cedar splinters, and a picnic table is the one piece of furniture people slide along in shorts.
Leave it raw to silver, or seal it and commit to resealing every couple of years. Raw is the honest choice, and the table doesn't care.
