This is the sandbox stripped down to its cheapest honest form: three 2x4 spines (two at the ends, one down the center for stiffness) with cedar fence pickets screwed across the top and down both sides, in that order. There's no frame joinery beyond butted screws, and no cutting at all if your pickets aren't dog-eared — buy them square-topped and the whole build skips a step.
The center 2x4 does real work despite being invisible once the box is finished: without it, a sandbox this size flexes noticeably underfoot and the picket seams start to gap. Orient it the same way as the corner 2x4s (narrow face to the sides) so the screw pattern stays consistent across all three spines.
Build the top and bottom picket runs first, screwed to the 2x4 spines while everything is still lying flat and easy to access, THEN close in the two open ends last — trying to work the end pickets on first makes reaching the interior fasteners much harder. A light final sanding of every top edge matters more here than on most builds: this is a surface small hands and bare feet interact with directly, all summer.

Lay two 2x4 spines down on a flat, level surface. Attach two cedar fence pickets to the top with 1-1/4" screws. Build two of these identical assemblies.
Attach two cedar pickets to each side of the two spine assemblies, connecting them into the overall sandbox shape.
Find the center of the side pickets you just attached and screw the center 2x4 spine in place, with the narrower face oriented toward the sides — the same orientation as the two corner spines. This is what keeps a sandbox this size from flexing underfoot.
Place the remaining top pickets along all three spines and attach.
Screw the remaining pickets to the open ends, flat against the sides. Sand every top edge thoroughly to prevent splinters — this surface gets bare hands and feet all summer. Finish with an exterior product if desired.
