This bed's signature look comes from an unusual finishing material: real wood shims, packed edge to edge across the plywood headboard panel and glued or nailed in place, creating a genuinely textured, three-dimensional surface that no paint technique replicates. Attach the 1x3 trim boards to the headboard and footboard panels first, and consider adding the shims at this same early stage rather than waiting until final assembly — working on the panel while it's still flat on a bench is much easier than shimming a panel that's already vertical and attached to legs.
The 4x4 legs attach to the headboard and footboard panels with pocket holes if you have a jig, or long countersunk lag screws or hardware brackets from the back if you don't — and there's a real fit consideration here: running the 4x4 legs through a table saw first to true them up gives a flush, square connection to the panel face, while skipping that step (as the original builder did) leaves a small visible gap between panel and leg. That's a legitimate finish-quality trade-off to decide on up front.
The siderails and headers must go on WITHOUT glue, screwed only — this is a specific, deliberate choice so the bed can be broken back down to get it through doorways it didn't enter fully assembled. Trim screws are recommended for the headers specifically because their small heads are much easier to hide than standard screw heads, and because a header that isn't well-fastened can work loose and lift over time.

Attach the 1x3 trim boards to the headboard panel and repeat for the footboard panel. If using pocket holes, drill 3/4" pocket holes along the side and top edges every 6-8" before attaching the trim, since you'll need them for legs and headers in a later step. Consider adding the wood shims to the headboard now, while it's still flat.
Attach the 4x4 legs to the headboard panel, using pocket holes, or long countersunk lag screws or hardware brackets on the back side if you don't have a jig. Repeat for the footboard.
Attach the frame supports and inner siderails together to form the platform base. Keep this joint screw-only, no glue — the legs need to stay removable to get the bed into the room.
Attach the siderails to the sides of the bed, screwed only (no glue) so they remain removable.
Attach the headers to the footboard and headboard. If pocket holes were drilled facing upward in the panels, attach with 1-1/4" pocket hole screws; trim screws are recommended since their small heads are easier to hide and hold better against headers working loose over time.
Fill the headboard with wood shims, set with glue (or hot glue) or small 3/4" nails. Sand and finish the whole bed.
