This is the companion bed that tucks under a Camp-style loft bed, but it stands perfectly well on its own as a rugged, low-slung twin. It's all 2x4 and 2x6 construction with self-tapping screws — no pocket holes, no fussy joinery — which makes it fast, strong, and forgiving.
The smart part of the assembly sequence is that it comes apart. You build the headboard and footboard as separate panels, attach 2x4 cleats to each, then hang the 2x6 side rails on the cleats with screws driven from the inside. That means you can finish the panels and rails separately and carry the pieces into the room for final assembly — a real advantage with heavy 2x lumber and tight doorways. The plan even notes you can buy the 2x6 in one 12-foot length and cut it in half for transport.
Finish before final assembly: paint or stain the headboard, footboard, and side rails while they're still separate and easy to reach. The slats lay in about 4" apart and screw down, but you can swap in a bunkie board or box spring instead if you prefer. Self-tapping screws mean no pre-drilling, but keep two per joint minimum and three on the cleats — this is a bed, and the cleats carry the whole load of the side rails.

Build the headboard and footboard panels, two screws per joint. Tip: once each panel is done, paint or stain it — and the 2x6 side rails — before moving anything into the room for final assembly. Reaching separate panels with a brush beats cutting in around an assembled bed.
Attach the 2x4 cleats to the footboard and headboard with three screws per joint. These carry the side rails, so don't skimp on the screws.
Add the 2x6 side rails to the outside of the 2x4 cleats, driving 2-1/2" screws from the inside. This is the knockdown joint — the rails lift off the cleats if you ever need to move the bed.
Lay the 1x4 slats in the frame about 4" apart and screw them down with 2" screws. Or skip the slats and drop in a bunkie board or box spring instead.
