Built-In Style Bookcases

Build each bookcase's box frame — sides, top, bottom, and a fixed shelf that also serves as structure — from 3/4" plywood, joined with pocket screws and glue.

Drill an evenly spaced column of shelf-pin holes on the inside front and back of each side panel, so the shelves can be repositioned later instead of fixed.

Cut the adjustable shelves from 3/4" plywood to fit each case, then sand them.

Assemble a simple frame for each door, rout a groove along the inside edge, and glue a 1/4" plywood panel into the groove.

Add trim across the front and any exposed side of each case, filling nail holes — skip trim on any side that will sit flush against a wall. Paint every component before installation.

Remove any base moulding along the back and side walls where each case will sit, slide the case into place, and brace it to the wall studs so it can't tip or shift. Hang the doors and drop the shelves onto the shelf pins.
