Joinery: From Screws to Dovetails
How two pieces of wood get held together — four projects, four answers.
Every joint is a different answer to one question: what is holding this together, and what happens when the wood moves?
A screw is fast and strong and will eventually work loose. A glued joint is stronger than the wood itself, and only if the surfaces actually touch. A dovetail is held by its own geometry and does not need glue at all — which is why 300-year-old drawers still work.
This path walks that argument in order. You will end up cutting dovetails by hand, which is the most over-mystified skill in woodworking. It is not hard. It is just unforgiving, and it wants you to be able to saw to a line — which is what the first three projects teach you.

Screws and butt joints. It works, it is fast, and it is exactly right for a painted pine bookcase. Start here so you understand what the later joints are BUYING you — because for this project, they would buy you nothing.

A case that has to carry weight and be sat on. Now the joint choice matters: a butt joint that would have been fine on a bookshelf will rack and loosen under a person. This is where you learn that load, not looks, chooses the joinery.
- Step 3:
A drawer is the honest test. It has to slide, stay square, and survive being yanked ten thousand times — and it is the first thing here where a sloppy joint is not just weak but VISIBLE, every time the drawer opens.
- Step 4:
Hand-cut dovetails, and nothing to hide behind: no screws, no plugs, no paint. The joint IS the project. Everything before this taught you to saw and pare to a line; this is the one where that is all you are doing.
